In this exercise, students are asked to interpret the meanings of famous statements regarding education. On the back, they must find 4 more quotes and interpret their meanings.
I have my students do this in the first week of school. It helps with goal setting and gets the year started off right. We discuss which quote they like the best and also how each quote applies to their upcoming academic year. This is a good way to assess the students' basic interpretation and writing skills, too.
This activity is also a good one to leave for a substitute as long as you're ok with your students looking up more quotes on their phones. Also, sometimes I only use the first page if I don't have a whole class period to dedicate to the activity.
