Through this mentor text, The Conquering Storm, students are exposed to numerous types of figurative language. The task of understanding the impact of word choice and figurative language is broken down into 3 parts.
1. Students are given examples and a definition of each type of figurative language.
2. Students find examples of each type from the story.
3. Students analyze the impact of each type on the overall craft of the story.
Students gain a better understanding of close reading, critical thinking, making inferences, and author's craft while analyzing figurative language in fiction. A proficiency scale (rubric) for figurative language is included to assist in grading and to help students reach increased depth of thinking.
