PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Help your students practice "observing" closely with Analyze Illustrations & photographs ~ Write a Caption. Enclosed you will find worksheets to help your students become proficient in the process of analyzing illustrations or photographs, making a claim, and writing a paragraph or caption using their ideas.

I used these worksheets for a recent observation. I cut out a picture of a hippopotamus, taped it to a piece of chart paper, and as a group (using page 3) we came up with observations. I had the kids copy what I wrote, so they could refer to it while they were working in a group. I call this process “close observing.” Students then got together and worked with pictures I had found in magazines and cut out. They have also used pictures of the internet and pictures in books. They then made a claim using the information they had webbed. EASY!!!

Included:

Page 3 - 4; CCSS:RI.7; Use information gained from illustrations (e.g., maps, photographs) and the words in a text to demonstrate understanding of the text (e.g.,where, when, why, and how key events occur).
 Students analyze a picture of an animal (or students can just think of an animal or use a stuffed animal). Students use the web to brainstorm what they see in the picture (or what they know).
 Students analyze an animal/picture and write a caption.
 Students can make a claim about the animal.
Page 4 & 5; CCSS: RI.7; Use information gained from illustrations (e.g., maps, photographs) and the words in a text to demonstrate understanding of the text (e.g.,where, when, why, and how key events occur).
 Students practice “observing closely.” This form can be used with any illustration or photograph.
Pages 6 & 7; CCSS: W.7; Conduct short research projects that build knowledge through investigation of different aspects of a topic.
 Students can use their webbed ideas to write a paragraph about the animal of their choice, or they can write a caption for the picture.
 I have included a second page for your more prolific writers. Students can draw a picture or glue a picture on the bottom of page 3.
