This Common Core reading comprehension focuses on determining the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including the impact of analogies on text. The lesson includes research-based strategies and strategic questions that prepare students for Common Core assessments. In this lesson, students will see that metaphors and similes are two types of figurative analogies. Analogies, metaphors, and similes are similar in the fact that they are comparisons of unlike things. But analogies are much more complex and more in-depth. In addition to the lesson, there are four pages of independent practice and review with questions modeled after the Common Core assessment items.
