Students view paintings and poems and analyze the use of allusion from a particular myth - Daedalus (focusing on Icarus). After viewing paintings featuring Icarus, students analyze the meaning of the Icarus myth and what he has come to stand for. Students then read poems and discuss how the allusion to Icarus has been used and how it has been changed or modified in the new setting.
I culminated this with an allusion project focused on Phaethon. Students read the Phaethon myth and created their own creative interpretations (paintings, short stories, poems, songs, etc.) using the Phaethon myth as their inspiration. They had to write a short explanation telling me about their final product, it's relation to the myth, and how they decided to create it.
