Teaching students to understand that author's word choice impacts both meaning and tone can be tricky. These worksheets can be used in guided reading groups or as a whole class presentation. I first model the strategy with a fiction excerpt and then model it with a nonfiction excerpt. The lesson includes worksheets and charts for both fiction and nonfiction, as well as sentence frames that work particularly well for struggling readers and English Language Learners. I begin with fairly straightforward fiction at the start of the year and then move towards poetry. Gradually, with practice, the charts can be completed by students using their own independent reading books. Worksheets written by Amy Vatne Bintliff.
