Common Core's expectations for what was once characterization requires far more in-depth analysis of characters and their impact overall on a text. At the secondary level, students are being asked questions far more rigorous than "what time of characterization is being used?" In turn, it is important that students have several opportunities to analyze characters in text.

In designing this packet, I considered some of the frustrations I had while in the classroom, and some of the frustrations I observe as a curriculum coach. Frustrations not only for teachers, but students as well. With that in mind, I have included 6 different graphic organizers that guide students through the analysis of characters in any given text. These organizers can be used with short stories or novels, and are adaptable for all of secondary.

Included:
- 6 different character analysis graphic organizers
- alignment with the Common Core Standards
- learning targets pulled from the Common Core Standards
- Step-by-Step directions on the best way to use the graphic organizers, including use of the Gradual Release of Responsibility Model, and these directions can be directly input into a lesson plan
- Recommendations/Additional Information (other ways to use the graphic organizers)
- Suggestions for Extending the Activity past the download.

Because the activities are rigorous and require extended thinking, students may need support through the activities.

Other Ways to Use These Activities
1. Rotating Stations: Teachers can place a different organizer at each station and allow students to rotate stations after an allotted amount of time.

2. Differentiation: Teachers can group students and give each group the organizer that best suits their skill level or practice need.
