This is a project I have used in my Creative Writing classes to help introduce the idea that studying the craft of writing is one way to improve your writing. After talking a lot about why people write and the writing process, we view clips of the film Finding Forrester and complete the analysis questions. After doing some thinking, students will answer questions about writing they like. Afterward, I introduce The Excellent Examples of Writing Assignment. This project has them look for writing they already know and enjoy and explain why they consider the pieces they chose are excellent. Their choices are open to anything written. This can be books, magazine, song lyrics, poems, quotes, website content, text books, instruction manuals, movie/TV scripts, etc. After being given a set of analysis questions, they will choose specific questions to answer about each piece of writing they choose. Students begin to see how different styles of writing have inherent qualities about them. Within small groups, they present their findings and critique and learn from their classmates’ choices.
A rubric aligned to Common Core is included.
