This activity is useful when teaching a poetry unit. I use it when I am teaching literal and figurative language, and my students LOVE it because they get to listen to music! This activity focuses on mood (emotions), literal vs. figurative language, and metaphor.
I also use it as an opportunity to discuss issues such as bullying and how to treat others.
The main focus is annotation, as I have my students highlight the figurative language and label what they see. I also have them circle the words that elicit an emotional response so that they may see how mood is created.
The questions are structured to begin with easier questions and move towards more difficult analysis.
This activity can be done as a whole class, in small groups, as individual work, or as homework. You choose!
