Are you teaching students how to evaluate media messages? These cooperative, discussion-based activities are a great extension to your media literacy unit! Students will enjoy working in small groups to analyze a variety of audio, visual, and written media messages created by the National Park Service.

Activity 1: Students evaluate and compare media messages like podcasts, videos, and press releases from the NPS using provided questions. (You choose the specific examples from a list of suggested resources; note that the podcasts are aimed at an adult audience, but students do not need to master the content to complete the activity.)

Activity 2: Students analyze and compare two posters created by the NPS. Then, they’ll design their own print/digital posters to advertise for the national parks.

Included are the following:
• questions for podcasts, audio clips, videos, live cams, press releases, and the NPS website (in both a card format and worksheet)
• 2 full-page posters
• questions for the posters (in both a card format and worksheet)
• poster planning sheet
• lesson plan with suggested media sources
• sample answer key for Activity 2
