This structure will allow your students to think "deeply" about a poem. The tasks that students do will help them to interact and connect to a poem in a way that is often difficult for students. They will preview the poem and write their initial interpretation, write their own thoughts and connections, think about the author's purpose, use context clues, and then think "about" the poem.
This could be a great tool for students to work on independently or with a partner. The discussions that students could have with one another and the whole class will help to build confidence in your students with reading and understanding poetry.
** Some teachers I work with assign this as homework - and then discuss it at the start of class the next day. Some have them do it in class in a small group. Try it out in a variety of ways.
** I have MORE of these that I am posting - so if you like this, you will like the others! I try to make them all different and get students to tackle various skills and thought processes.
