Practice with your students analyzing poetry that shows how diversity may influence one's experiences in society.
Provide instructions for the following: 1) the first read of the poem for first impressions and to gain a greater depth of understanding, prompt second read, 2) guide students through the completion of text dependent questions using tone, word choice (“show” the reader rather than to “tell” them, literary devices), imagery, style (formal, informal, descriptive, narrative and conveys the setting) and theme (lesson/message).
3) allow time for students to process the poem before whole class discussion
