Objective: Students Will Be Able To analyze a political cartoon or other primary source for main idea, tone, and significance.

A large component of understanding U.S. history is being able to "get" a political cartoon, such as one from Thomas Nast. Some students have difficulty interpreting sarcasm. Using a non-content meme and cartoon, students will work individually, as a team, and as a class to analyze the documents using an acronym as a template.

Suggested Directions: Read the first slide to the class. Students will work individually to fill out their template one letter at a time. Once students have completed "S," partners will turn and share. Once partners have shared, students will be asked to share with the class. Repeat.

*I made neither the meme nor the cartoon.
