Have students analyze primary sources. I usually use this for looking at pictures in history, political cartoons, and paintings. Examples I use this for are Migrant Mother, Washington crossing the Delaware, propaganda used during wars. It sets up students curiosity and can be used to preview a topic or unit. I usually have students work in partners and give them ten minutes to fill out as much as they can for one picture. I then go over it and it helps them come up with some questions that they can answer throughout the unit. It gets students interested in the topic because they have to come up with the questions. This is great for getting students using critical thinking skills and introducing concepts of social studies. It can be used for just about any primary source.
