This focus of this unit is to equip students with the necessary skills and strategies to write and perform a written product. All literacy strands (reading, writing, speaking, and listening) are included in this unit, beginning with taking note of the necessary components involved in speaking and ending with students independently writing a speech or spoken word, which they will perform. While this unit can be used with any ninth or tenth grader, it has been developed with intentional scaffolds for ELL and/or struggling learners. Therefore, there are limited extensions in this unit.

In addition, for some lesson vocabulary words have been identified. Level 2 words require explicitly instruction with games, Frayer Model, etc. Level 3 words are more technical, so the teacher should be prepared to give a student friendly definition for those.
