This product is designed to be used as a tool to help your students learn to analyze literature. Using Shel Silverstein's The Giving Tree, students will complete a character analysis of the tree and the boy. They will discuss the nature of the relationship between the tree and the boy, whether or not the story ends happily, and who is to blame for the state of the characters at the end. They will also very briefly discuss theme, refrain, and symbolism. I have included a PDF version which includes a full-color version as well as a black and white version. I have also included a Word document if you would prefer to edit it or use a more simplified version. The answer key is also located in the Word document. At the younger grade levels, this could be used as an assessment after covering these skills. At the higher grade levels, it could be used as a refresher or as a scaffolding tool. The low reading level should reach almost every student, but the content is geared toward older students. The activity is all open-ended. If you have any questions, please let me know! Thanks for looking!
