This activity can be used with any story to help students identify the theme and analyze its development throughout.
On the first page, students answer question about the conflict, character development and story resolution. They then consider their answers to these questions to identify the theme.
On the second page, students are asked to provide text examples from the story and explain how those examples support the theme's presence in the story.
This could easily be used as a graphic organizer before students write a paragraph or short essay about the theme in their reading. I think it works best with a short story, but could also be used with a novel.
*Please note - this is best used after students have had an introduction to what theme is, but are still struggling to correctly identify theme in their reading. I use the lesson on theme from Teaching Channel (https://www.teachingchannel.org/videos/teaching-themes) to introduce theme) when I first introduce the concept.
