Product Description
Students often have difficulty understanding grammar when the topic is divorced from actual usage. This assignment provides a remedy. Students read the Shel Silverstein poem "Sarah Cynthia Sylvia Stout Would Not Take The Garbage Out" aloud in class. They then use the accompanying chart to analyze aspects of every verb in the poem, including tense, mood, voice, and whether a verb is regular or irregular.

This text is particularly suited to verb analysis because it contains several instances of the subjunctive mood as well as multiple irregular verbs and conditional tenses.

This file contains both the assignment (directions, chart, and a link to the poem) as well as a key for instructors. This assignment is intended for cooperative learning but can be assigned as individual work without making any changes to the file.
