Whenever I introduce point of view to my students, I tell them to think about a time when they had a disagreement with a friend. They each tell their story of what happened, and there will be some things that are the same in each of their stories. However, there will also be some things that are different, because they each have their own point of view! It's the same with common stories, we all know the point of view of the three little pigs, but what about the wolf? We all know what happened from Cinderella's point of view, but what about from her stepmothers side? With these fun activities, your students will analyze those common stories, and they will now see the villains point of view!
First, you will need any traditional version of The Three Little Pigs, and the wolfs side using the story The True Story of the Three Little Pigs by Jon Scieszka. Then, you can spend all week analyzing each story with the graphic organizers provided, and for a concluding activity they will pick a side and write a detailed paragraph why using evidence from the story. A craftivity is provided to go with this, and examples are shown in the product. My students loved this!
Then, you will do the same thing but this time will analyze a traditional story of Cinderella, and then the stepmothers point of view with the story Seriously, Cinderella is so Annoying by Trisha Speed Shaskan (part of the fractured fairy tales set). The same graphic organizers are provided, and again it ends with students choosing a side and writing why. In addition, there is an extension activity for students to do some creative writing and make their own version of the story from one of the step sisters point of view.
