This activity/presentation is adaptable for analyzing any well-written argumentative essay. I used this activity to introduce an exemplary student model of argument writing. The writing piece I presented was a 7th-grade argumentative student exemplar from Lucy Calkins' Writing Pathways text that focused on banning football from schools. Each day I presented one focus of argument writing. It took me 12-15 minutes to teach each day. In one week, I was able to cover several aspects of argument writing, and my students came away with a useful tool which we referenced throughout the rest of the year. The outcome was extraordinary!
