This is a step-by-step, easy-to-follow unit that is fun for the students and teaches them to analyze and apply figurative language, which is a Common Core Writing Standard for grades 6-12. With this unit, students learn what similes, metaphors, and personification are, and they analyze this figurative speech in an Emily Dickinson poem. Then through illustrations of the poem, they demonstrate their understanding. Next, students reverse this process and use figurative speech to describe pictures of nature in their own descriptive poems, which will then be illustrated by other students. The final step is a self-evaluation of the effectiveness of their descriptive poems and the figurative language they use. Students really enjoy the creative aspect of this unit and gain a strong understanding of figurative speech.
