I had students begin by viewing the Initial Slideshow with movie clips and brief movie synopsis, recording initial thoughts, reactions, or questions and identifying words whose connotation can relate to ethos, pathos, or logos on the Movie Speeches First Thoughts worksheet. Depending on your discussions this could take 30-40 minutes.
I then grouped students and gave them each a set of Trading Cards (each group should have all 8 cards). We read together the scenario and the task so that students knew what they were supposed to be doing. I also gave each group a Hard Copy of the Speeches to use for pulling evidence.
Students will rearrange the characters based on their chances of survival which will stem from the effectiveness of their ethos, pathos, and/or logos that exists in their speeches.
Students will finalize and justify their list on the Final Chart ranked from death to survival.
