As class sizes increase and time available to teach decreases, instructing AP students has become more challenging than ever. Many AP students today do not have the critical reading skills that they require to do well on the exam. For this reason, I start out my semester with this hands-on learning activity. Students use newspaper and magazine articles to explore elements of style and organization. Extensive annotating is done and shared with the class.
As AP students will be working critically with their own texts on the AP exam, I prefer to have my students work independently, collaborating only through verbal interaction if needed. Grading is done holistically.
