The perfect introductory activity to get to know your students on a more personal level. Students will be writing about their ancestry and how the first members of their family came to the United States. This activity involves light family member participation. If students are first generation, then they will write about their journey to the United States. If students are of Native American descent, then they will write about their first known relatives.
**There is a alternative assignment (Cultural Identity) for students who cannot access information about their ancestry.
In this activity, there are also directions for "Ancestry Share-Alouds", where students will be bringing in 3 specific items that represent their ancestry.
Great for middle and high school! I have been using it with my 10th grade world history classes for five years now. It is a wonderful way to learn from my students, but for students to also learn from and more about each other!
