Student in Spanish classes who are studying the Incas, Mayas, Aztecs can plan a trip to see the civilizations in this really cool group travel project!
*This project should come after teaching a unit on the three civilizations.
This projects focus on learning about the cultures and gaining skills in being able to plan a complete trip and does not focus on learning or practicing the Spanish language. Rather, students will learn how to find visas, get a passport, buy a plane ticket online, research about needed vaccines, check the weather and plan to pack, learn about appropriate clothing, be able to find a tour/hotels/transportation, figure out how to convert currency, and much more! Students will also have to interview a friend or family member who traveled abroad to learn from those experiences.
Students work in groups of 3-4 to plan a complete trip to visit the ruins of either the Aztecs, Incas, or Mayas. The final product is a poster displaying all their trip information. This project may take up to 5 class days and is well worth the time! The skills they learn are priceless.
I use this project with seventh graders in level 1A Spanish and they love it! It is also appropriate for HS students.
