This is a 25 slide, highly animated, power point presentation on Ancient Civilizations - Ancient Iraq (Mesopotamia) & Southwest Asia. Each of the slides are editable so you can change it to fit your individual needs.

Most of Southwest Asia has an Arid climate today. This region was not always covered in desert. Ancient Mesopotamia or 'land between rivers' was a green land where many plants grew due to the rich soil and occasional rain. The surrounding area is often called the Fertile Crescent or the Cradle of Civilization.

The Tigris and Euphrates rivers supplied fresh water for humans, plants, and animals. Eventually these rivers would provide irrigation for the farms of the first civilization in human history. The world’s first cities may have developed as early as 10,000 BCE in Damascus or Jericho. However, these individual cities do not qualify as a civilization.

Mesopotamia is different than most civilizations since they developed as city-states. A city-state is a nation that is only one city. Mesopotamia was a collection of cities, and they shared many aspects of culture.

Mesopotamia invented new technology, being the first to use the wheel followed by the creation of the wagon, a transportation revolution for farming and trade. They developed a number system based on 60 and they used a 12 month calendar with a 7 day week.

Mesopotamia, was one of the first 4 early civilizations to develop and thrive.
