This activity can help activate students' knowledge about past civilizations. In my own class, the students line up into a "human timeline", deciding when different civilizations and inventions might have happened. This allows them to discuss what they think they know, and engage in discussion with each other. After the students have agreed upon their places in the timeline, we review, as a class, where they each felt they fit through time, and they justify why they made choices about their placement. Finally, using the dates on the information sheet, we rearrange into the correct chronological order, which often sparks new discussion.
This zipped file included 3 pdf files - an information page, 24 timeline cards with dates and 24 timeline cards without dates.
