This unit follows Kathy Nunley's Layered Curriculum style. This unit provides an overview of the standards covered, a list of required activities, over a dozen additional activities for the student to choose from, and a grading sheet. Please note: When I used this with my students three years ago, we taught according to the Kansas state Social Studies standards. This unit was created to complement the information provided in the textbook. I left the standards on the first page for you to either delete altogether; or use as a reference to re-align with common core/other standards for your usage. In addition, there are a few references to the textbook unit and chapter, and page numbers. You will need to edit these references. For management purposes, I had firm due dates when each layer was due and would collect (and sometimes also grade) as we went. I used a spreadsheet to record student progress (date-student-current activity, etc) to help myself and my students stay on track. This also helped me to gather, distribute, and manage the resources appropriately. These type of units can be very easily modified to meet individual student needs as well as time constraints, although these units usually took my sixth graders about 2 weeks. The units were always a big hit with my students and I liked how it provided student choice as well as a teacher-friendly way to assess their understanding of the concepts.
