Students review the Archaic Period of Ancient Greece, starting with the development of the alphabet and ending with the Battle of Marathon, by completing a timeline activity and answering 4 questions. There are 24 timeline items to be organized chronologically and classified according to a system detailed in the instructions. Students then complete one task for 6 items of their choice and a different task for 4 other items. All instructions are provided in the handout. There are arrows in the first two lines of the timeline showing students the direction to fill out the pieces in. Answers are provided where appropriate and this could work for a sub!
Sample timeline items and questions include:
--Syracuse settled by Dorian Corinthians
--Archon established in Athens
--Solon introduces coinage system and other reforms
--Pythagorus opens his school
--Cleisthenes in power
--What do you consider the highest point of Greece’s Archaic Period and why? Would historians agree with you, why or why not?
--Describe how democracy finally came to Athens. Do you think the Athenians were better or worse off for it and why? Why did democracy not take hold in Sparta too? Do you think it should have, why or why not?
***a teacher's note is included in the file describing an alternate way students can complete this activity***
