This resource on Ancient Greece works well individually or in partners/small groups. It also makes a great learning center to incorporate both social studies and ELA.
This resource provides your students with a variety of opportunities:
1. Proofreading and correcting errors in grammar, capitalization, punctuation and spelling
2. Learning new facts about a given topic
3. Summarizing/paraphrasing new information into a cohesive and succinct paragraph
Here is a suggested sequence for the activities:
Have students proofread and correct any mistakes in the fun facts. This can be done alone or with a partner. Students know they are looking for 20 errors. An exception may be made due to the Oxford comma based on your preference as a teacher or curriculum. An adapted version has also been included which provides the number of errors per sentence.
Check what students have changed. This is best done in a whole class fashion in case there are questions, but students could also use the answer key provided. You might even want to first have students pair with another person (or group if working in partners/groups) to see if their 20 errors are the same.
CAN BE OPTIONAL: Students then use the knowledge they have learned to write a short paragraph that includes ____ sentences (you as the teacher will provide the number) but sums up the facts they have learned. They should not use the exact wording from the given sentences. They should use their own words as much as possible and summarize the facts learned. They should sure to use correct grammar, spelling, punctuation and capitalization. Discuss the importance of a cohesive and succinct paragraph.
You could have students share their paragraphs aloud or allow the whole class to view any especially well-written paragraphs. You could even have partners proofread paragraphs to check for errors first.
