Students review the Hellenistic Period of Ancient Greece, starting with the Lamian/Hellenic War and ending with the Roman rule of Greece beginning, by completing a timeline activity and answering 4 questions. There are 22 timeline items to be organized chronologically and classified according to a system detailed in the instructions. Students then complete one task for 6 items of their choice and a different task for 4 other items. All instructions are provided in the handout. There are arrows in the first two lines of the timeline showing students the direction to fill out the pieces in. Answers are provided where appropriate and this could work for a sub!
Sample timeline items and questions include:
--Colossus of Rhodes built
--Achaean League founded
--Corinth sacked by Mummius Achaicus
--What do you consider the highest point of Greece’s Hellenistic Period and why? Would historians agree with you, why or why not?
-- Discuss the top 3 internal and external events (or factors) that ultimately led to Greece falling under Roman rule at the end of the Hellenistic Period. If those events had not happened, do you think Rome would have still taken control of Greece? Why or why not?
***a teacher's note is included in the file describing an alternate way students can complete this activity***
