Students will rotate around the room and brainstorm about the meaning of famous philosophical quotations. They will then use a reading strategy to gather information about the three most famous Greek philosophers: Socrates, Aristotle and Plato. The teacher will then model how a philosophical discussion should proceed before providing students the opportunity to lead and participate in group philosophical discussions of their own.
Philosophical discussions can help develop independent thought, inference and advanced analysis on virtually any topic for students. This lesson is designed not only to cover Greek philosophical information but to incorporate literacy skills and help students practice independent analysis and critique.
