Want your kids to practice their research skills on a relevant and timely topic? Students will learn more about a chosen country and its history in the ancient Greek games.
This authentic performance task follows the GRASPS model of selecting a goal, role, audience, scenario, product, and scoring rubric. Students will use a variety of print and digital resources to research a chosen country and its ancient Greek games history, while being able to add some creative elements of their own. Please note that print and digital resources are not included in this product because this entirely depends on which countries your students choose or which ones you select for them. I have my students research online using NetTrekker, which filters Internet sites. I don't give them specific sites. They find their own.
Students can fill out the included graphic organizer or create their own, and then use the information they gather to create a self-selected product. I give my students a list of possible products and let them choose from the list or they can always choose something else. Possible products are a powerpoint, flip chart, travel brochure, newspaper article, poster, etc. I love giving my students a choice because often times their ideas are better than mine!
I have included a scoring rubric that is specific to 3rd grade standards and one that leaves off the standards.
Here is the Table of Contents so you know exactly what is included:
Performance Task p 4
Scoring Rubrics p 5-6
List of Categories to be Researched p 7
List of Additional Activities/Center Options p 8
Differentiation p 9-10
Materials Needed p 11
Time Needed (Daily Schedule) p 12-13
Guiding Research Questions p 14
Peer Evaluation Sheet p 15
Graphic Organizers p 16-17
Example of a PPT p 18-20
The additional activities/center options that are included are ideas that you can use in your classroom to enhance this project. Most of them do not require additional materials or are easily created using materials you already have in your classroom. They do not require a lot of prep work, or any prep work at all.
The graphic organizers are the same except one has a boy and one has a girl on it. The graphic organizers include an editable text boxes that you can type in the specific category you want your students to research, or you can simply delete the text box and have your students choose their own. I have included a list of possible research categories to choose from.
This project is geared for 3rd grade, but can be used in grades 2-5, depending on the ability level of your students. I included differentiation (remediation and enrichment) options.
I included pics of an example powerpoint that you can show your students if you would like. I suggest taking pics of your students' products so you can use them as exemplars the following year.
