In these activities your students will be invited to focus on the three most famous battles of Persian Wars: Marathon, Thermopylae, and Salamis. For the first battle, Marathon, you will read 20 short paragraphs to your students. At the end of each paragraph, you will give them three options and they will pick one as the one they think happens next. They get one point for each correct selection. After this, they will work on a cooperative interactive worksheet concerning the Battle of Marathon.
The students will then be given short readings about the Battles of Thermopylae and Salamis. These are similar to what was done with the Battle of Marathon but also different. Like the earlier, they will choose among three options and pick the one they think happens next. But instead of 20 paragraphs, there are only 10. Also, you will not read aloud this time. They will do it on their own. If they pay attention while they are reading there are some obvious clues (on some but not all of the questions) that will help them.
This time they will do a cooperative interactive worksheet about the battles prior to attempting the WHAT HAPPENS NEXT? sheet. When they have completed the WHAT HAPPENS NEXT? sheet they will again participate in a cooperative interactive worksheet. By the time you have completed these activities your students will be very well grounded in the facts and significance regarding these important battles.
