This Interactive Notebook resource features 9 lessons on Ancient Mesopotamia plus a study guide and test, totaling 11 sections. Starting with the geography of both Mesopotamia and Iraq, it covers new vocabulary, and explores a timeline of the ancient period where the cradle of civilization first began. Next it looks at the four main governments to inhabit this region, explores the invention of writing, and takes a peek at the advancements made through math, astronomy, medicine, and technology. Finally, the religion and culture of the Mesopotamian people is the focus, before wrapping up with Hammurabi’s Code. Each lesson takes 1-3 days to cover, making this a comprehensive unit which includes multiple foldable crafts, cloze notes, maps, and lots of opportunities for writing and creative expression.

Lesson 1: Geography of Ancient Mesopotamia & Iraq is presented in both formats so you can present it as you would like (then or now). It includes maps, cloze notes, 2-column notes, a Q&A foldable, a checklist rubric, a study guide, and an exam.
Lesson 2: Ancient Mesopotamia Vocabulary includes 6 vocabulary strategies, a list of vocabulary words and definitions, flashcards, a crossword and word search, and an exam.
Lesson 3: Ancient Mesopotamia Time Line includes a foldable time line with a pocket to store it in. It covers the beginning of civilization up until the conquest by the Greeks.
Lesson 4: Governments in Ancient Mesopotamia includes a reading about the four main empires that reigned in this region – Sumerians, Akkadians, Assyrians, and Babylonians. It includes a step booklet to organize the information from the reading, as well as comprehension questions to accompany it.
Lesson 5: Writing in Ancient Mesopotamia includes two readings. Cover the invention and history of writing in Mesopotamia, as well as the Epic of Gilgamesh. Use a foldable craft for taking notes. Also included is a “Writing in Cuneiform” activity and an opportunity for students to write their own literary epics.
Lesson 6: Math, Astronomy, & Medicine in Mesopotamia covers the advancements made in this area as well as the technological advancements made too. One reading passage is included in this section as well as two foldable crafts.
Lesson 7: Religion in Mesopotamia presents the religious beliefs of the people in the region. One reading passage, one interactive activity, and one writing activity round out this section.
Lesson 8: Mesopotamia Culture includes a reading passage and a mini book to complete as students learn about the schooling, music, games, and more in Mesopotamia.
Lesson 9: Hammurabi’s Code includes a reading passage, comprehension questions, and a simulation based on the first 50 laws of Hammurabi’s Code.
Lesson 11: Assessments includes a three-page study guide with an answer key, as well as a 3-page comprehensive exam including matching, short answer, identification, essay, etc. These are provided in an editable format if you know how to work with tables in PowerPoint. The fonts used in the editable version are largely Kimberly Geswein's Miss Speechy IPA and Falling Slowly. Nueva Std is also used for the page titles.
