Students will begin this assignment by watching the Crash Course video: Mesopotamia. The video will first introduce students to the region of Mesopotamia, also known as the Fertile Crescent. The importance of the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers, religion, and societal structure are all briefly explained. Following that, the original city states of the region are described and their history is briefly covered. Students will then learn about the Babylonian Empire under Hammurabi and his law code, as well as the Assyrians and their establishment of the worlds first empire. After watching the video, students will proceed to the Ancient History Encyclopedia to learn more about the contributions Mesopotamia made to world. Their invention of writing, the wheel, animal domestication, irrigation, and urbanization are all described so students can understand how important this civilization was. The eventual conquest of Mesopotamia by the Persians, Alexander the Great, and finally Arab Muslims, is covered and describes the end of the civilization.
