Students will begin this assignment by watching the Crash Course video:The Roman Empire. Or Republic. Or...Which Was It? The video will begin by describing the societal structure of Ancient Rome, the function of the Roman Senate, The Roman Consuls, and the function of the Roman Republic. The video will then describe Gaius Julius Caesar and how his rule over the Republic and that of his successor,Caesar Augustus, brought about the age of Emperors and the Roman Empire. The use of Legions to gain power in ancient Rome, the constant expansion of Ancient Rome, and its eventual fall are also reviewed by the video. Following the video, students will proceed to the History.com website for a detailed history of Ancient Rome. The founding of the Republic, The Punic Wars and Hannibal, The rule of Caesar, the golden age of Caesar Augustus, the adoption of Greek culture/art/architecture, and the succeeding Emperors are all explained in great detail. The rule of Constantine, his adoption of Christianity, and splitting of the Empire into East and West is described as the beginning of the end for the Empire as is the subsequent barbarian invasions. Students will read about the destruction of the Western Roman Empire but also learn about how the Eastern Empire- or Byzantine Empire- would continue to exist for almost another 1000 years.
