Students use this graphic organizer as a during reading strategy to track characters and predictions of who the murderer is as the novel progresses.
This can be used for whole class readings, literature circles, or independent study, including a summer reading assignment.
After reading, students analyze the theme of "crime and punishment" by agreeing or disagreeing with the order in which the murders took place. The characters were invited to the island because they were never held accountable for their dark past: an involvement in some else's death. With this information, the order of the murders on the island are determined (by the murderer) based how despicable each character's actions were in relation to this dark past. If students decide to reorder the list, it should include and explanation and justification of why they felt a certain character's past was "worse" than the other characters.
