After reading the classic Agatha Christie book, we talk about how or if the events of the book could happen today, in the modern world. How would a killer lure victims to a secluded island? How would the killer account for the cell phones guests would certainly have today? We then watch the 1945 film version of the story, and the ending of that production prompts more discussion. Was the change in the ending an improvement or not? Why would a movie have changed the ending? This assignment allows kids to further analyze both of these discussions by writing a persuasive letter to a movie studio encouraging it to remake and modernize this story. The student handout includes what must be included in the letter, what their grade will be based upon, and a suggested outline to follow to organize their letter. This activity also requires students to review use of persuasive techniques and proper letter format. I usually get really good writing for this assignment, and yes, I really do send their letters to Paramount.
