The first in a series of activities that will bring algebra 1 alive by showing students the relevance of different algebra topics. This problem give students a brief introduction to the launch of a space shuttle. A student handout and teacher guide are provided in the download. The activity give real data from a space shuttle launch. Students will first look at the mass of the vehicle versus time and will then look at the altitude versus time. Students will use a graphing calculator to find linear, quadratic, and exponential models. They will make connections between the components of the models and what they represent about the space shuttle launch.
