This product is a compressed zip file containing a five slide PowerPoint presentation, a 2 page PDF printable file, and a two page WORD document (same as the PDF but editable) to accompany the poem, "And the Ghosts" by Graham Foust. This poem is a modern day, three word "flash fiction" type of modern poem. I use this with my seventh graders, but could be used in other grades. The PDF file contains a hyperlink to the poem, as it is under copyright and cannot be used in the document.
I begin this lesson by asking the students if they've ever seen a piece of art in a gallery that looks like someone just threw paint on the canvas. We talk about interpretation. Then, the students read the "And the Ghosts" and we, again, talk about interpretation.
The handout asks 3 interpretive questions about the poem that the students answer in small groups. There is then a comparison to another "flash fiction" novel by Ernest Hemingway. Ernest Hemingway was challenged to write a meaningful novel in as few words as possible to evoke emotion from the reader, much like "And the Ghosts".
Students then write a poem or short story in as few words as possible. The PowerPoint accompanies the handout. An additional writing prompt included is using the poem title as a creative writing prompt. My students LOVED this poem (especially because it was only 3 words)!
