This writing assignment is designed to allow students to write a letter about the horrible conditions of Andersonville in a creative way. This writing assignment is great when combined with a short classroom unit on Andersonville. However, this assignment can be used as an individual lesson plan.
Students will use the following websites to gather information about life at the Andersonville Prison.
Letters from Union Prisoners of War at Andersonville
Andersonville National Park Service: Teaching with Historic Places
Andersonville Prison Civil War Trust
The three websites are very student friendly. The student handout will guide students through the process of writing the letter about life in Andersonville. The letter uses creative writing by allowing students to take the role of a Union soldier that has recently escaped from Andersonville. A grading rubric is included for the teacher.
