Students read, analyze, and compare and contrast two speeches by Andrew Jackson: one on Native American relations and another on Native American removal. They answer 21 questions of varying degrees of difficulty individually or in pairs. The answers are included where appropriate. This would be great for a sub!
Sample questions include:
--How does Jackson summarize what the act and some of its provisions say about tribal land?
--Explain the two different political positions the Native Americans can be found in based on how they are perceived/considered by the American government.
--What does Jackson say the Indian's survival depends on?
--Why would the government have to exercise control over the Native Americans?
--What does Jackson mean when he says "those prudential arrangements?"
-- Rewrite the 5th paragraph on the second page in your own words to demonstrate understanding.
--Write a 1-2 (solid) paragraph reaction to each speech from a Native American perspective.
--Do you think the speeches were honest words or propaganda, why or why not? You must provide examples from the text to support your opinion.
