Many times school systems identifies our gifted students and then mainstreams them into regular education classes with very little resources to help the teachers. I’ve created an independent novel study on a second grade level to meet the needs of those students that could handle a challenge. I love the Andrew Lost series by Judith Greenburg. It is about a student that shrinks himself and then goes on an adventure. In his travels he learns about different science concepts.
This independent novel study has the students read each chapter and then pause and reflect about what they read. Rigorous questions follow each chapter based on higher level questioning. After the student answers the question they are asked to write down 3 facts they learned from that chapter. If I noticed that the chapter didn’t have many facts, then I included facts about the topic. At the end of the book I’ve included a place where the student can develop an action plan based on that they learned. When the packet is done, they can cut it on the dotted line and have a “field journal” of facts they learned about the topic.
