This activity is a hands on activity that could be complete as a cross curricular activity with your schools P.E. department or done independently in your class. Students will spend between 1-3 classes exploring how math, specifically angles, plays an integral role in sports. Angles in hockey, basketball, and football are explored through a variety of hands on activities that are followed with some mathematical calculations and reflection questions. Teachers will need the following resources for each section.
Hockey: stick, ball/puck, cones (20-40 minutes)
Football: football (20-30 minutes)
Basketball: basketball and hoop (20-30 minutes)
The activities would be aligned with middle school math standards or applied high school math. Student typically enjoy the hands on nature of the activity and get a better understanding of the math involved in sports.
