Have you considered using current events to help students make connects to science and social studies?
I have create a two-page worksheet to use alongside a TED video about how humans have responded to and adapted their body covering with respect to surviving shark attacks. My students loved this video and were very engaged in the focus question discussion pre and post video. Their favorite part was, of course to illustrate the adaptation and their attention to detail conveyed their high interest. I know that this worksheet can be applied to the study of other cool animal adaptations and the web is a great resource with short video snippets that you may use to bring the world of animals, habitats and predators right into your classroom.
I have a full lesson plan available, just visit my store. The lesson plan includes extension activities, rubric for the work and more.
