Insects are incredible! The coloring on their bodies (adaptive coloration) helps camouflage them and helps to warn predators away. Investigate insect adaptations with this fun activity!
Lab directions: After learning about different types of adaptive coloration, students work in pairs of groups to examine four different insects. I use actual insect specimens for this lab-- having student groups rotate insects until each group has had a chance to examine each specimen. This would also work with insect illustrations.
**Adaptive coloration types students will need to understand: counter shading, aggressive mimicry, disruptive coloration, and eye spots.
