PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This whimsical reader's theater play teaches students about animal adaptations. My goal was to provide a fun way to reinforce or introduce the terms herbivore, carnivore, and omnivore. This animal adaptations play is 10 pages in length. Cartoon illustrations are added throughout. Please note that this play is not an in-depth lesson about animal adaptations, but is a great way to enhance existing lessons, or begin a unit of study about what animals eat. The reader’s theater play format allows many students to participate, and it reinforces reading and speaking skills as they learn about animal adaptations.

The story takes place at a wildlife preserve in Conifer Forest National Park (fictional name). Three of the animals in the nature preserve (a beaver, a wolf, and a raccoon) are upset because Ranger Lox mixed up their meals and brought them the wrong food. A bear named Mr. Big serves as their spokesperson (or spokesbear), and he works with the ranger to eventually solve the problem. Each of the three animals describes how their teeth are adapted for eating specific foods.

I tried to add humor throughout the play, so I hope your students laugh as they learn about animal adaptations. You could read it in one sitting, or divide the play up into sections, having the students make predictions and a discuss the science concepts embedded in each scene.

I have included an animal adaptations wordsearch activity for your students to do after they have completed the play. It contains the key science terms, plus the names of the main characters in the play.

Special thanks to Cosmic Dog Designs for providing the graphics for this activity.
