The Animal Alphabet Coloring & Uppercase Handwriting Packet is perfect for emergent writers to practice letter formation and fine-motor skills. The packet features one animal for each letter, with a large picture to color and three lines of letters to trace on each page. Each animal follows the Zoo Phonics program (alligator, bear, cat, deer, elephant, fish, gorilla, horse, inchworm, jellyfish, kangaroo, lizard, mouse, night owl, octopus, penguin, quail, rabbit, snake, tiger, umbrellabird, vampire bat, weasel, fox, yak, and zebra).
Suggestions for use:
- One page should be completed per day. They seem short, but beginning writers put a lot of energy into their writing and can become frustrated.
- Numbers are not written on the letters to instruct students which line or curve should be started first (this is because the numbers can become distracting and take away from the letter itself). It is important to teach and reinforce that all letters, uppercase and lowercase, should begin at “the top” (either the top solid line or the dotted line, depending upon the height of the letter). Monitor students’ progress throughout each page and provide reminders when needed about beginning at the top. Correcting this behavior will help with fine motor memory.
- The pictures are used to provide a starting point for the letter sounds; introduce this as you teach.
