These critical thinking activities are part of my larger Animal Classes resource found at Animal Classes: A Study of the Classification of Vertebrates
The 6 pages of included critical thinking activities are designed to be used AFTER students have been introduced to all 5 classes of animals. For a complete unit designed to teach students about the animal types, see the complete resource linked above. Two types of activities are included in this resource:
* Where Do I Belong? On each of these 2 worksheets, students read paragraphs about 3 unusual animals. They are asked to use the information from the paragraphs as well as what they know about animal classification to determine into which class each animal belongs. Students must cite information from the text to justify their conclusions. Featured animals are: duck-billed platypus, moray eel, kiwi, pteranodon, narwhal, and newt.
* Just What IS It? Students choose one of six included Mythical Creatures cards (you may choose to print on cardstock and laminate for durability). These cards contain information about mythical creatures including Pegasus, dragons, mermaids, griffons, hippocampus, and harpies. After choosing and reading a card, students use the information on the card as well as what they have learned about the classes of animals to complete a chart about the characteristics of the creature. They must then use the characteristics and inferences they make to determine the classification of the mythical creature.
